Yoga is commonly understood as the practice of asana (postures). When doing asana it is essential to link movements with breath. That is what makes your movements the practice Yoga rather than ‘exercise.'

Today, in America, with so many ‘brands' of Yoga you will often encounter the question “What Kind of Yoga are you taking/do you teach?” All Yoga practices flow from the essential practice of Hatha Yoga.

Ha (“sun”) tha (“moon”) Yoga has been practiced for thousands of years. It is a system for integrating and balancing the mind, body and spirit; balancing the Yin (“feminine”) and Yang (“masculine”) energies, creating union. Depending on how far you travel down the yogic path, it can lead to reduced stress, increased mindfulness and deeper connection with the people and world around you. It is more than just physical exercise, although the practice of asana (postures) will enhance your physical well-being and should reduce stress. In all, there are eight limbs of Hatha Yoga.
